Effect of Prosody on Vowel-to-vowel Coarticulation in English

چکیده
It has been claimed that segments are 'strongly' articulated in two prosodic positions: pitch-accented syllables [4, 5] and domaininitial positions [3, 6, 7, 9]. The current study examines the effect of these two prosodic conditions on resistance to vowel-to-vowel coarticulation, based on acoustic data. This study first shows that vowels are strongly articulated at the edges of prosodic domains. The degree of V-to-V coarticulation is in general greater when vowels are separated by a lower prosodic boundary (e.g., a word boundary), and it smaller when they are separated by a higher prosodic boundary (e.g., an Intonational Phrase boundary). A greater V-to-V coarticulation was found when the vowels have no pitch accent. Overall, vowels in prosodically stronger positions resist coarticulation.

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...
متن کاملEffects of consonant cluster syllabification on vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in English
This paper investigates how different syllable affiliations of intervocalic /st/ cluster affect vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in English. Very few studies have examined the effect of syllable structure on vowel-to-vowel coarticulation. Previous studies show that onset and coda consonants differ acoustically, articulatorily, perceptually and typologically. Onsets are stronger, more stable, more ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Prosody on French V-to-V Coarticulation: A Corpus-Based Study
This study examines whether the degree of vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in French (better known as “vowel height harmony”, V2-to-V1 henceforth) varies as a function of position in prosodic domain (i.e. IP initial vs. word-medial) and duration of V1 (i.e. short vs. long). Following the literature on the phonetics-prosody interface, segments at stronger edges are more resistant to coarticulatory ...

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملLexical Effects on English Vowel Laryngealization
It is known that lexical statistics can influence coarticulation. For example, more confusable words (i.e. those with a low frequency relative to their phonological neighbors) have been shown to exhibit more nasal and vowel-to-vowel coarticulation than less confusable words in English and French. In this paper, we give evidence that another type of coarticulation, laryngealized phonation on vow...
